Joint Replacement

joint replacement

Are you suffering from hip or knee pain and have been told that you are a candidate for a knee or hip replacement? Pre-habilitation is just as important as the rehabilitation after the surgery. Recent studies have shown that patients that have attempted to improve their physical shape prior to the surgery have reduced recovery time, gain better results with their range of motion (ROM), and even perceive less pain. Some patients can prolong the need for surgery, or even avoid having surgery at all with physical therapy!
If you are considering a joint replacement, chances are you have developed some compensatory movement to ease the pain/discomfort when you walk. This can create issues to other joints later into the future. Here at The Gait Center, our team takes an in-depth evaluation of your gait pattern. We then created a custom rehabilitation program designed around you, because we know no two people are identical. This program will involve strengthening the muscles involved with the hip or knee, improving flexibility/mobility of the joint, and correcting any gait deviations.
Once you have had joint replacement surgery, your initial treatments will consist of cryo/thermal therapy, manual therapy, neuromuscular re-education, and assessment of the surgical area. First, we need to build a strong foundation. Our goal here is to manage any inflammation, regain range of motion (ROM), and initiate motor recovery. Once the swelling subsides and your ROM is near normal, we will progress to strengthening and stabilizing the muscles around the joint. Using Wolff's law, that bones are strengthened and bone density improves through stress, we will gradually prescribe exercises to strengthen/stabilize the joint. The final phase will be to incorporate power and return to work/sport activities into your treatment.
What sets us apart from other therapy clinics? Well, we’re glad you asked. We have the ability to work with you one-on-one. You will have the therapist’s undivided attention, instead of being put on a piece of equipment while they tend to other patients. This gives us time to educate you on your recovery program and allows you to ask questions, thus building a better relationship with your therapist. We feel that education is just as important as the exercises. The more informed you are, the more aware of the habits needed to improve your recovery. Our facility is equipped with 3 sets of parallel bars that are lined with mirrors, a custom ramp and stairs assembly, and other specialized tools for static and dynamic balance. Our team is diverse with PTs/PTAs that bring a wide range of experiences, knowledge, and creativity, to ensure your best possible outcome of getting you back to your best life.
