Dry Needling

dry needling

Dry Needling is a technique utilized by our therapists to treat musculoskeletal injuries. During a Dry Needling session, a fine sterile needle is used to achieve a local structural change to muscle tissue affected by spasm. When the spasm is released with the needling procedure, improvement in proper movement patterning can occur. It is called "Dry" Needling because there is no solution injected as with a hypodermic needle. With Dry Needling, the needle itself and the effects it produces with the tissue is the treatment.
Dry Needling differs from traditional acupuncture. Acupuncture is based on Eastern medical diagnosis and is a facet of traditional Chinese medicine, whereas Trigger Point Dry Needling is based on Western medical research and principles. The main similarity is that the same sterile, disposable, solid filament needles are used for both techniques.
Dry needling, if found to be an appropriate intervention, will be supplemented with additional manual techniques, therapeutic exercise, and neuromuscular re-education to help our patients achieve their physical therapy goals of pain-free movement and activity.
